Region To Host 5000 Pilgrims

THE countdown is on for the Hunter to welcome about 5000 pilgrims from 30 countries, in the lead up to World Youth Day 08 celebrations in Sydney.

In 100 days, the pious travellers will descend on Newcastle for five days, on their way to their spiritual pilgrimage, to be celebrated at Sydney's Randwick Racecourse in July.

Newcastle MP Jodi McKay has called for the establishment of an advisory committee to ensure the city garners the appropriate spiritual and financial benefits from the visit.

Catholic Bishop Michael Malone appealed for support from Newcastle City Council, businesses and community organisations, which would combine to make the visit a sweeping success.
