HUNTER residents have been urged to think green as they clean up after their Christmas and New Year's celebrations.

Batteries, corks, electronic waste, food scraps plus greeting cards and wrapping paper are among the items that can be recycled.

A steady stream of Christmas waste was deposited at Newcastle's Summer Hill Waste Disposal Centre yesterday.

"At a time of year when consumption levels are at their highest and more waste is generated than on any other occasion, the post-Christmas clean-up is a great opportunity for us to reduce our environmental impact," Planet Ark chief executive Sean Barrett said.

Planet Ark and Australia Post have launched the Festive Recycling campaign in an attempt to increase recycling between Christmas and Australia Day.

The campaign will build on the successful Cards 4 Planet Ark program, which resulted in half a billion greeting cards being recycled over 14 years.

"The Festive Recycling campaign will show people how to reduce their impact on the environment and save money at a time of year when we traditionally buy more, waste more, travel more and use more energy and water," Mr Barrett said.

An estimated 90 per cent of Australian households can now recycle their cards through kerbside collections.
