SOFT feminine frocks are expected to turn heads track-side as women step out as part of Melbourne Cup celebrations today.

Celebrity stylist Kelly Smythe, who worked with Jennifer Hawkins for this year's Melbourne Cup, said women were opting for colours such as lilacs and soft pinks.

Both Hawkins and Anna Bay-raised Charli Delaney have chosen multi-coloured frocks in light hues.

Smythe said women traditionally wear black and white for Derby Day but the Cup always brought out colour.

There are a range of fashion parades displaying the latest Cup wear taking place around Newcastle today.

Newcastle's Foong sisters, who are behind the label High Tea with Mrs Woo and have displayed past collections at Australian Fashion Week in Sydney, will show their latest dresses at the Brewery, Queens Wharf about 1pm.

Designer boutique Jo Jo at the Junction will conduct fashion parades at Newcastle Jockey Club at midday followed by Noah's on the Beach at 1.30pm.

Jo Jo Boutique owner Lyndi Hill agreed women were purchasing feminine colourful dresses with many in an off-one-shoulder style.

She said Lisa Ho and George were the labels of choice.

Meanwhile fashionistas are once again opting for hats over fascinators this year.

Newcastle milliner Laura Cavallaro received more than 50 orders for Melbourne Cup.

"I've had orders for hats in a striking emerald colour as well as purple," she said.

Cavallaro worked with Sydney-based milliner Jane Lambert in 2003 to produce Cup hats for newsreader Sandra Sully and television vet Katrina Warren. The 25-year-old from New Lambton Heights endures a run of sleepless nights in the lead up to the Melbourne Cup.
