THERE were plenty of celebrations for Newcastle's Trimmin Women Boardriders after they finished third in the NSW Surftag Series at South Curl Curl on Saturday.

The team of Michelle Kent, Julia Lennan, Angela Scheibel, Tyla Charlton and Lyndall Garden won their heat by 17 points before backing it up with a three-point victory in the semi-finals.

Surftag teams have a one-hour time limit for each surfer to catch two waves.

Garden was in sensational form in the heat, scoring seven in her second power wave, which was worth double points. Scheibel was Newcastle's star in the semi-final.

In the final, the Novocastrians could not find enough high-scoring waves in increasingly sloppy surf.

"You only have 12 minutes each to catch two waves, and a couple of the girls took a little longer, so we were scrambling for waves at the end," Kent said.

North Narrabeen, led by Belinda Hardwick, took out overall honours.
